“Major events in our community are coming up soon and we’re urging people in Pendle to stay safe and observe them safely at home,” said Councillor Mohammed Iqbal MBE, Leader of Pendle Council.

“We know that important events such as Remembrance Day and Muhammad’s Birthday – Peace Be Upon Him – on Wednesday 28 October to Thursday 29 October, mean a great deal to many people in our community.

“But we are going to have to mark events differently this year as Pendle, along with the rest of Lancashire has a very high Covid alert level.”

Pendle is in tier 3, the Government’s highest Covid alert level for areas with a very high level of infections.
“Processions for Muhammad’s Birthday and for Remembrance Sunday will not be possible this year,” he explained.

“Some of Pendle’s mosques are doing online talks, so please contact your mosque for details.
Rauf Bashir from Building Bridges Pendle said:

 “Unfortunately, the impact of Coronavirus continues to challenge the entirety of our community.
“We must remain mindful and adapt traditional celebrations across faiths and cultures, given the restrictions currently in place.  

“We have experiences to learn from earlier this year with Easter and Eid and must uphold a similar attitude of safety first with upcoming national days of importance,” he added.

Pendle Council’s Corporate Director said:

“In line with regional and national guidance we’re asking people in Pendle to remember from home on Remembrance Day, Sunday 8 November.

“We are inviting you to take part in a two minute silence at 11a.m. on Remembrance Sunday, for example at your front door.  

“It’s a chance to quietly reflect on those who gave so much in armed conflicts around the world, including people from Pendle.

“You may also wish to watch Remembrance Day coverage on TV or online,” he added.

And Pendle Council is also asking local people to share photos relating to Remembrance Day on Instagram, using the hashtags #PendleRemembers and #LancashireRemembers

“You could share a photo of someone in your family who fought in World War l or ll or a friend or relative who has been in the armed forces or who has been affected by armed conflict,” added Philip.
On behalf of the people of Pendle, The Mayor of Pendle, Cllr. Ken Hartley, will be handing wreaths over to local organisers at Pendle war memorials in advance of Remembrance Sunday. 

The Mayor said: “I feel honoured to represent the people of Pendle in this way.”

Ex service man Paul Tunstill, who works in Pendle Council’s Environmental Health Team is taking part in the Tommy 10k national sponsored run to raise funds for The Royal British Legion.

Paul explained:  “I am running 10 km a week up to 11 November to raise money for injured veterans.

And local people are being urged to celebrate Hallowe’en and Bonfire Night differently this year too as major events cannot take place.

The Lancashire Resilience Forum, of which Pendle Council is a part, has made it clear that people must follow the rules for Lancashire to reduce the spread of Covid-19 and keep people safe.

“If you have any questions or concerns about events in Pendle please check our website and if you are still in any doubt, get advice from our Environmental Health Team by phoning 01282 662009,” said Philip.

“This means that unfortunately there can be no trick or treating this year as it would increase the risk of household transmissions of the virus,” he stated.
