Pendle Council urges residents to look out for each other and self-isolate when need to

Published: Friday, 2nd October 2020

Residents are urged to look out for each other by staying at home if they test positive for COVID-19 or have been in close contact with someone who has.

And since Monday (28 September) anyone who tests positive or is contacted by a Test and Trace service must self-isolate by law.

Councillor Mohammed Iqbal, Leader of Pendle Council, said: “The rate of infection is at the highest level yet across the whole of Pendle which means local people need to take urgent action and change their behaviour to bring it down.

“We know how difficult this is for everyone but we really are on a knife edge.

“If you test positive, have been in close contact with someone who has, or if you have symptoms, it’s vitally important that you self-isolate to protect others.

“This means staying at home and not going anywhere else including work, the shops or to do some exercise.

“If you need to pick up medication or groceries order them online or ask your family and friends to help.

“You could get a £1,000 fine if you don’t self-isolate when you should be and this could increase to £10,000 for repeat offenders.“

Support is available for people on low incomes who are unable to work while self-isolating through the £500 Test and Trace Support payment.

And anyone who doesn’t have friends or family nearby to help can contact Pendle Community Support Hub via www.pendle.gov.uk/communitysupporthub

Councillor David Whipp, Deputy Leader of Pendle Council added: “By self-isolating you will keep each other safe and stop the virus from hopping to others.

“I’m pleased that the Government has listened to us and increased the payment for those on low incomes who need to self-isolate but still need to pay their bills.”
