 “And we want to thank people in Pendle for continuing to recycle despite all that has happened this year,” said Councillor Mohammed Iqbal, Leader of Pendle Council.

Statistics released by Recycle Now, the national recycling campaign for England, show that through lockdown the UK has become even more environmentally aware, with nearly 9 out of 10 households saying they ‘regularly recycle’. 

Councillor Iqbal added:

“We collected far more recycling when people were at home under lockdown.

“And our crews made a huge effort to cope with the extra amounts, helping us to recycle more for Pendle,”he said.

Research carried out  by Recycle Now during lockdown and an omnibus survey completed in July showed that more people are prepared to change their lifestyles to help the environment: 73 per cent, up from 68 per cent in 2019.

And an amazing 93 per cent of UK households say they believe that ‘everyone has a responsibility to help towards cleaning up the environment’. 

Recycle Now is managed by WRAP – the national Waste and Resources Action Programme for the UK.

Peter Maddox, Director of WRAP UK, said:

“It’s fantastic to see that despite everything that has been thrown at them this year, more people than ever in Pendle are taking responsibility for protecting the environment by choosing to recycle.

This is something we can all do, wherever we live – an individual action that, when performed by everyone, adds up to a huge change.

“Pendle’s recycling and waste workers have been real heroes too, providing the best service possible under the most difficult of circumstances.

“The recognition they received in the form of friendly waves, notes, cards and gifts left out for them is heart-warming proof of how people in Pendle have cooperated,” he added.

Carole Taylor, Pendle Council’s Waste and Recycling Co-ordinator said:

“Together We Recycle is a good theme because everyone in Pendle can play a part in reducing the amount of waste being dumped in landfill.

“There is a huge environmental and financial cost if things which can be recycled are sent to landfill,” she explained.

“Please visit our website www.pendle.gov.uk/recycling to check what can and can’t go into your recycling bins,” she said.

“It’s vital that we all put the right things in the right bin so that non-acceptable items aren’t mixed up with things which can be recycled in our bins, as there’s a risk that a whole recycling load has to go to landfill.

“We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who is recycling it right and helping us to recycle more, it really does make a difference,” she added.
