Carole Taylor, Pendle Council’s Waste and Recycling Co-ordinator said:

“Letters are going out from Monday 20 April until early May reminding gardeners to sign up for collections from 1 July as their paid collections finish at the end of June.

“People who’ve opted to go paperless had an email reminder in March,” she added.  

“Gardeners can sign up anytime from now to continue getting green bin collections from 1 July to the end of November 2020 and then the collections from March to June 2021, ” she explained.

“Local gardeners are busier than ever due to the current lockdown.

“And with Lancashire County Council’s Waste and Recycling Centres currently closed, our garden waste collections provide a very valuable service,” added Carole.

Anyone not on the scheme already can apply to join any time from now via Pendle Council’s website www.pendle.gov.uk/gardenwaste

The cost for the subsidised nine month service is £33 – less than £1.74 per collection and is still one of the cheapest garden waste collections in the country.
Leader of Pendle Council, Councillor Mohammed Iqbal added:

“Despite being short-staffed due to the coronavirus lockdown, our recycling crews are out as normal, providing important services to Pendle people.

“But because of the government rules to keep a safe distance of 2 metres, we are asking local residents not to approach workers to have a chat or ask questions about collections.

“Any changes to council services are listed on our website www.pendle.gov.uk/disruptions and we also get news out to people via the local media, Facebook and Twitter,” he explained.
“It’s important to keep recycling,” he stated.
“By subscribing to the garden waste collection scheme you are doing an extra bit for Pendle and the environment, helping us to reduce the amount of waste that goes into landfill.

“If you have the benefit of a garden it’s a great tonic for mental and physical wellbeing during the challenges we’re facing due to COVID-19.

“And gardeners can take advantage of the longer daylight hours we have,” he added.

Stephen Hargreaves from the Council’s Gardening Services Team shared some of their gardening tips for April.

Stephen said: “Treat your lawn to some spring fertilizer.  It will help the grass to rejuvenate ready for summer.

“As the weather is starting to warm up in April it’s important to keep on top of the weeds!  

“But there is still a chance of late frosts so check forecasts daily and protect any tender plants and fruit blossoms.

“This month you can start sowing annuals and hardy herbs and wildflower seed outdoors.

“And don’t forget your containers and pots will benefit from some feed to ensure plants thrive over the summer months,” he added.
