“Nelson and Colne Markets will close from 5pm today Monday 23 March until further notice,” he stated.

“This is to protect both traders and customers and to avoid the virus being transmitted from people passing through our markets,” he explained.

Traders will not be charged rent during this period and the closure will be reviewed at the end of April.

“Signs are also going up in Pendle playgrounds advising people not to use them to reduce the risk of the virus spreading through children and parents touching equipment,” explained Deputy Leader, Councillor David Whipp.

There will also be signs in parks across Pendle warning people to keep a safe distance from each other.

“We are reminding people of the Government guidelines to keep two metres apart in a bid to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus,” said Councillor Whipp.
 
Additional changes to Pendle Council facilities include:

• reducing the opening hours of Contact Pendle at Number One Market Street Nelson, opposite Nelson Library, to 10am – 4pm.
• no evening meetings at Nelson Town Hall.
