Help shape a new Masterplan for Nelson!

People who live, work, study or shop in Nelson are being urged to give their views to help shape an ambitious new Masterplan for the town.
A drop in session is being held at the ACE Centre on Cross Street Nelson BB9 7NN on Tuesday 29 October from 4pm to 7pm.
Leader of Pendle Council, Councillor Mohammed Iqbal said:
“This is a chance for people who care about Nelson to have a real input in shaping exciting plans for the town centre.
“It’s vital that as many people as possible have a say in Nelson’s future!”
Neil Watson, Pendle Council’s Planning and Economic Development Manager, said:
“The last Nelson Masterplan led to a transformation of the town centre, including an amphitheatre for events around the stunning Shuttle sculpture and an attractive boulevard.
“We also opened up the town centre to slow-moving traffic again and created more parking spaces.
“These were all things which local people wanted.
"But there is still much work to do for Nelson and local people can make a big impact on the next major plans for the town,” he stressed.
He added:
“Nelson faces many challenges including under-used leisure and cultural facilities and empty shops.
“We have a number of problem sites, there isn’t a thriving night-time economy and there are some poor perceptions of the town.”
Anyone not able to make the consultation drop in can give their views from 30 October until 9am on Wednesday 6 November.
“The Nelson Masterplan will be the blueprint for the future direction of the town over the next ten years and the positive effects will be felt far beyond this,” explained Councillor Iqbal.
“This is a huge opportunity as we gear up to win funding of up to £35 million for Nelson,” stressed Councillor Iqbal.
Pendle Council is through to round two of the Future High Streets Fund.
If successful, this could mean up to £10 million investment in projects in Nelson including a focus on better transport connectivity and healthier lifestyles.
“Nelson has also been chosen by the Government to bid for up to £25 million from the new Towns Fund.
“I’m disappointed that we are still waiting for the prospectus to fine-tune plans to bid for this,” explained Councillor Iqbal.
“We have ambitious plans for Nelson, working with local and regional organisations, retailers and local residents,” he said.
“Our aim is to make our vision for Nelson as a town centre fit for purpose in the 21st century a reality,” he explained.
“This will play a vital part in supporting the economic growth of Pendle over the next 10 - 25 years,” he stated.
