Thousands of Pendle gardeners have signed up for the 2019 fortnightly garden waste collection service which starts in July.Carole Taylor, the Council’s Waste and Recycling Co-ordinator explained:

“As the gardening season of long days and sunshine continues we’re reminding people who’ve forgotten to pay the annual fee that it’s not too late!” 

People can join online for another gardening year via www.pendle.gov.uk/gardenwaste and pay just £30 which covers the fortnightly service until 1 July 2020.

Anyone not on the scheme but who would like to see if we can add their address can visit www.pendle.gov.uk/gardenwaste to find out.

And the website includes a list of what can and can’t be composted in the green bin.

David Lambert from Barrowford has been on the scheme since the beginning and has just paid his annual £30 fee.

David said:  “I was a farmer’s son and I’ve been a gardener all my life, so I enjoy being outside.

“At this time of year I’m using my green bin for grass cuttings and I dig up weeds using an old dinner knife – it’s gentler than a trowel.

David added:  “I find the garden waste collection service good value and I make sure I fill my green bin and put it out every fortnight.

And in Barnoldswick Kasha Templar-Lloyd, aged 12, who goes to Fisher Moore High School in Colne helps with the weeding in her garden.

She makes good use of the family’s green bin to recycle their garden waste.

“We’ve done recycling as a topic at school,” she said.

Councillor Mohammed Iqbal said:

“People of all ages are aware that taking care of the planet is vitally important,” said Councillor Iqbal,

“By recycling your garden waste you are doing your bit for Pendle and the environment, by reducing the amount of waste that goes into landfill,” he said.

Pendle Council’s garden waste collection service runs from 1 July until the end of November and starts again from March 2020 when the gardening season begins, until the end of June.
