And bin wagons carrying the recycle it right message will soon be seen doing their rounds across Pendle.

This follows an announcement from Lancashire County Council that more plastics could be recycled in Lancashire once changes are made to the recycling plant which Pendle’s recycling is sent to. 

Councillor Mohammed Iqbal, Leader of Pendle Council, said:
“It’s understandable that people get confused about which plastics they can and can’t recycle.

“We’re passionate about recycling and support the national drive to recycle more.

“We are pleased there’s a commitment from Lancashire County Council to adapt the plant in Leyland so that more types of plastic can be recycled.

“But these changes haven’t happened yet and there is still a lot of work to be done, including finding markets to sell the extra items for recycling to,” he warned.

“There are NO changes to our recycling collections yet and there will be a big campaign to get the message out when the time is right and everything is in place,” he stressed.

David Walker, Pendle Council’s Environmental Services Manager, said:
“At the moment we can’t recycle plastic bags, empty plastic yoghurt pots, cling film or plastic food containers in the brown bin.

“But a lot of people forget that we CAN recycle more than just pop bottles through the brown bin scheme. 

“We can collect bubble bath and shampoo bottles and we can recycle bottles from your kitchen cupboards such as cleaning bottles with the tops on,” he said.

A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said: "We are working towards integrating pots, tubs and trays into doorstep collections later in the year.

"Already all plastics for which there are recycling markets are accepted at Household Waste Recycling Centres and this new move will further increase the amount of plastic recycled in the county."

Councillor Iqbal added:
“We feel very strongly about recycling and It’s great that thousands of people in Pendle help us recycle over 10,000 tonnes of waste which would otherwise end up in landfill.”

“It’s good news that some harder plastics such as yoghurt pots, plastic toys and plastic garden furniture  are being accepted again at Lancashire County Council’s household waste and recycling sites.
