A new Mayor and Mayoress for Pendle

Pendle's new Mayor and Mayoress: Cllr Ken Hartley and Cllr Jayne Mills
Pendle’s new Mayor, Councillor Ken Hartley became our first citizen during the annual Mayor Making ceremony on Thursday 16th May at Nelson Town Hall.
And Pendle’s new Mayoress is his friend Councillor Jayne Mills.
The Mayor was born and bred in West Craven and started his working life as an apprentice with Rolls-Royce in Barnoldswick.
He worked for Rolls-Royce in Europe and North America including Canada and enjoyed a second career looking after executive jet aircraft at overhaul bases in Montreal and Toronto.
In his Mayoral speech Councillor Hartley pledged his support to be an ambassador for Pendle both inside the borough and further afield.
And he paid tribute to the retiring Mayor and Mayoress James Keith Starkie and his wife Janet Starkie saying:
“I offer them my thanks. They have served the Borough with energy, distinction and considerable success.”
The new Mayoress has lived in West Craven for 30 years and developed an active interest in local politics.
She became a Pendle Councillor for Coates ward in Barnoldswick and a BarnoldswickTown Councillor in the 2nd May elections.
Jayne is looking forward to the coming year where, with the Mayor, she’ll visit Pendle’s schools, businesses and organisations.
She will also be leading efforts to fund services that go the extra mile.
Councillor Ken Hartley said:
“Jayne and I want to support those people who often put their own lives at risk to come to the aid of those in desperate need.
“We have looked both east and west and our chosen charities are:
• The local Air Ambulance Services (North West and Yorkshire)
• Our area’s fell and cave rescue organisations in Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale and
Wharfedale
• The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (Fleetwood and Whitby)
“We’ll also be supporting smaller organisations which exist without regular government funding and rely on volunteers to make a difference,” added Jayne.
“And we’ll be choosing organisations which depend on charity support to enable them to do some incredible work,” she said.
During his speech Councillor Hartley congratulated Councillor Neil Butterworth and Kaye Duckworth on becoming Deputy Mayor and Mayoress for the coming year.
“We are looking forward to working with them,” he said.
