Nelson traders are encouraged to protect themselves from theft

Almost 40 independent retailers across Nelson have requested forensic property marking kits to protect themselves from burglary.
It’s part of a crime reduction scheme launched by Pendle Community Safety Partnership in response to a number of thefts in the town.
And the Partnership is encouraging eligible businesses to join Schofield’s Butchers on Scotland Road in marking their valuable property.
Councillor David Whipp, who has responsibility for Community Safety in Pendle, said: “Some of the town’s retailers have already been targeted by thieves who have broken in at the rear of the premises to steal stock and metal items.
“There are still some free SelectaDNA kits available and we’re urging any Nelson businesses which haven’t yet taken up this offer to get in touch and claim one.”
SelectaDNA can link criminals to burglaries and break-ins. The product consists of an adhesive solution containing a unique DNA code, a UV tracer and a series of microdots which can be easily applied to electronic goods, jewellery and other valuable items of stock.
If any marked items are stolen from shops in Nelson town centre and recovered by police they can be traced back to the individual retailer via the DNA code.
The DNA marking has the added benefit of placing the burglar at the crime scene, which can lead to arrest and conviction.
Pendle Council has put up signs on the streets to warn potential criminals of the new scheme. And window stickers are now being displayed in participating shops.
