“Pendle Council is delivering the annual recycling and refuse and recycling collection calendars, so look out for it landing on your doormat and keep it,” said Council Leader, Councillor Paul White.

“The calendar has important information about what you can and can’t recycle to help us recycle it right in Pendle.

“The calendars also flag up changes to collections over Christmas and New Year, so keep your calendar handy,” he said.

The information is also on Pendle Council’s website www.pendle.gov.uk/recycling including how to find out when your collection days are online.
Carole Taylor Pendle Council’s Waste and Recycling Co-ordinator said:

“Pendle recycles over 10,000  tonnes of waste per year  which would otherwise end up in a landfill site.

“And we’re urging people to recycle more,” she stated. 

“The calendar reminds people that they can put things in their brown bin which they often put in their grey rubbish bin.
“For example you CAN put empty aerosols in the brown bin for recycling, with the tops off.

“And we also take clean foil and empty metal biscuit tins in the brown bin,” she added.

Pendle Council will be running three Recycle it Right Roadshows at local supermarkets to help get the message across including a recycling quiz with prizes  to test local residents on what they can and can’t recycle.

The roadshows will run from 11am – 2pm and are at Sainsbury’s Colne on Wednesday 14 November, Morrisons Nelson on Wednesday 21 November and The Co-op Barnoldswick on Wednesday 28 November.

The calendars we’re delivering show a change to the way we recycle plastic bottles as Carole explained:

“We’re now asking people to keep the lids on empty plastic bottles including empty shampoo and bubble bath and cleansing product bottles.

“That’s because Lancashire County Council which takes our recycling has alerted us to the problem that smaller loose lids were often not going through the recycling process.
“Please check your calendar where we make it clear how you can recycle it right for Pendle,” urged Carole.

“We know that people would like us to recycle plastic, such as empty yoghurt pots, empty food trays and empty margarine tubs, but unfortunately  the plant in Lancashire cannot take these things.

“People sometimes put the wrong types of plastic in their brown bin.

“If there is too much of the wrong type of plastic in a collection it can cause problems in sorting out the correct types of plastic as the right plastic gets hidden from optical sorters by the wrong plastic,” she warned.

“This is a big issue for recycling nationally and the government is looking at how we recycle plastic,” explained Councillor White.

“Lancashire only recycles certain types of plastic bottles. Other types are too expensive to recycle. 
“Lancashire County wants to collect more types of plastic, such as pots, tubs and trays. This is a top priority for them. 

“But they would need to use new technology to separate different types of plastic and a bigger recycling facility as well as finding new markets for all the extra material,” he said.
