Pendle's Booths store is entered into RTPI Planning Excellence Awards 2016

Published: Wednesday, 29th June 2016

Pendle's Booths store development has been entered into this year's Royal Town Planning Institute's (RTPI's) Planning Excellence Awards.

It was entered by planning consultants Steven Abbott Associates LLP who worked on the innovative Barrowford development. The company was part of a team led by Booths’ property director.

The entry highlights that the challenging site demanded collaborative working and sensitive communication with Pendle Council, Lancashire County Council, Barrowford Parish Council, residents and businesses.

Taking on board concerns from the local community, the store was completely redesigned.

But the original concept of a building which reflected the architecture of a mill was imaginatively maintained by the architects Wilson Mason.

The scheme received a national commendation from the Civic Trust earlier this year.

Steven Abbott, Partner, Steven Abbott Associates LLP, explained: “We’re very pleased with the outcome of the development.

“The split hillside nature of the site, close to housing with access constraints, needed an innovative design and flexibility.

“The result is a building which adds vibrancy to the centre of Barrowford and enhances the neighbouring conservation area.”

Dennis Mendoros, Chairman of Pendle Vision Board, said: “The Booths store in Barrowford is a fantastic development which is sensitive to the area’s heritage.

“I think it will be a strong contender in the RTPI Planning Excellence Awards 2016 and wish it lots of luck!

“It’s an excellent example of how collaboration, innovation and regeneration can create an exceptional development.”
