In 2014 Pendle was selected as one of 11 areas nationwide to take part in a government initiative called Right to Build.

Right to Build aims to help those residents seeking to build their own home, by encouraging councils to identify suitable land in their ownership.

Last year Pendle Council created a Self-build and Custom Housebuilding Register to establish the level of interest from residents, the types of houses they’d like to build and the preferred locations.

And it’s now set to release five large plots in a pleasant residential area of Nelson, south of Barkerhouse Road in between Tweed Street and Bamford Street.

But only those who’ve joined the Register are eligible to buy one of the plots which are all suitable for 3-4 bed detached properties with generous gardens.

The Council is now urging anyone who is interested in receiving information about the plots to get on the Register as soon as possible.

You can get on the Register by completing a simple form on the Council’s website – www.pendle.gov.uk/righttobuild

Councillor Asjad Mahmood, who has responsibility for the Council’s housing, said: “If you’re interested in receiving information about the plots available now, or would like to register your interest in building or commissioning your own home in another part of Pendle, please get on the Register.

“Being on the Register doesn’t guarantee that a suitable plot will be identified in your preferred area, but it does mean that we can inform you of the opportunities as they arise and understand the demand for self-build in the Borough.”

Judith Stockton, Senior Regeneration Officer, added: “The lack of suitable sites has been highlighted as a real barrier to self-build. 

“It’s really exciting to be able to give residents who dream of building their own home the opportunity to do so.

"Custom and self-build homes are often innovatively designed and can be cheaper, greener and more affordable than standard market housing."
