News story about Pick Up for Pendle

Pendle's Mayor Councillor David Whalley with Peter Smith of Pick Up for Pendle.

Pendle’s Mayor Councillor David Whalley and Mayoress Barbara Whalley invited the Pick Up for Pendle Team to Nelson Town Hall for an official thank you this month!

Pendle’s Mayor, Councillor David Whalley said:

“The Pick Up for Pendle volunteers do a brilliant job and we wanted to say thank you with scones and tea in the Town Hall – as they  have been out in some very cold conditions this winter!

Peter Smith, who set up Pick Up for Pendle two years ago said:

“We now have more than 20 volunteers and it was nice to be appreciated for our efforts.”
Peter added:

“It’s important that more residents help Pendle Council’s efforts to keep Pendle tidy.

“That’s why I started the group Pick Up for Pendle, to encourage other people to do their bit,” he explained.

“Come and join us!”

Peter goes out once a week with volunteers to pick up litter for a couple of hours, choosing a different day each week so that everyone can fit it in.

Anyone who’d like to join Peter and other volunteers on litter picks can contact him on (01282) 603553 or email him at petersmith.pendle@gmail.com  for details.

Audrey Drinkwater, Pendle Council’s Senior Locality & Communities Officer said:

“We’ve been pleased to support Peter’s efforts.

“He’s doing a great job and we hope that other residents will join him to improve Pendle’s environment.”

Local residents can also help by reporting people who drop litter – including litter thrown from cars - by filling in a form on Pendle Council's website at www.pendle.gov.uk/forms or calling the Council’s contact centre on (01282) 661743.
Pendle Council fines and prosecutes people for littering, for example last year we  took a man to court for littering and he was fined £550.
