News story about proposals to change waste and recycling collections to save money.

Councillor Iqbal & Councillor Clegg urging people to have a say on proposals to change refuse and recycling collections.

Over 2,000 people in Pendle have taken part in a big consultation by Pendle Council which ends on Sunday 26 November.

The survey is designed to get local people’s views on a range of proposals in a bid to save £400,000 on refuse and recycling collections and street cleaning next year.

The survey can be found via Pendle Council’s website www.pendle.gov.uk or using this direct link    https://www.snapsurveys.com/wh/s.asp?k=150730344205

Copies are also available in local libraries, Nelson Town Hall and at the Contact Pendle centre on Market Street, opposite Nelson Library.

“We’re urging people to have a say because we need to know which of the proposals local residents would find the most acceptable," said Councillor Iqbal.

Pendle Council is canvassing local opinion to inform councillors who’ll have to make some difficult decisions to help meet the total savings target for next year of £1.2 million.

“We have to save money on services due to ongoing reductions in our funding from the government which have totalled £7 million since 2010,” Councillor Iqbal explained.

“Coupled with the loss of Lancashire County Council’s annual subsidy of £760,000 towards our waste and recycling service from 1st April, we don’t have the option to do nothing,” stated Councillor Iqbal.

The proposals Pendle Council is consulting on include:

  • Changing the current fortnightly collections for refuse and for recycling to every three weeks.
  • Keeping the grey bin refuse collections fortnightly but changing the brown bin and paper and card recycling collections to every four weeks instead of the current two weeks.

Councillor David Clegg who leads on refuse and recycling services said:

“I urge everyone to fill in the survey to tell us which of the proposals work best for them.

“It only takes around five minutes but public opinion will help us make these difficult decisions,” he said.

“I’d like to thank everyone who’s shared their views already, we’ve had a big response,” added Councillor Clegg.
