Hundreds attend community iftar

Pendle's Mayor and Mayoress at the Ghausia Mosque, Nelson
Nelson’s Ghausia Mosque opened its doors this week on Monday 12 June to welcome people from different faiths and backgrounds.
“The open event was organised to express sympathy for the victims of the terrorist attacks in Manchester and London,” explained Leader of Pendle Council, Councillor Mohammed Iqbal.
“Local faith leaders shared their messages of support and our condemnation of hate crime.
“This was a superb gathering of around 300 people from across Pendle and it was a wonderful show of support,” he added.
Local church leaders including priests were among the guests as were representatives from the police together with staff from Pendle Vale College and Nelson and Colne College.
Markazi Jamia Ghausia Mosque’s Iman Hafiz Khalid Mahmood said:
“We wish to strengthen relationships between our community and initiate a dialogue in a safe and supportive environment.”
Guests took part in the breaking of the fast called Iftar with other members of the community from across Pendle as the sun set over Pendle.
Pendle’s Mayor Councillor David Whalley was at the event with his wife, Mayoress Barbara Whalley and other local councillors attended, too.
Councillor Iqbal said: “The Mayor entered into the spirit of Ramadhan by observing the 19 hour fast so that he could share this experience.
Pendle Council’s Strategic Director Dean Langton and Corporate Director Philip Mousdale also attended the Community Iftar.
