Nelson’s iconic town centre clock is being repaired after thieves stole part of the mechanism which turns the clock hands.

Two weeks ago thieves broke into the clock tower and removed a small brass block.

Councillor Mohammed Iqbal, Leader of Pendle Council, said: “We’re perplexed as to why thieves stole the brass block because it wasn’t worth very much.

“Lancashire Clockmakers in Padiham are making the replacement part from scratch.

“We expect that it will be in place by the end of the week so you’ll soon be able to set your time by Nelson’s town centre clock again!”

The replacement part has cost Pendle Council £190.

If anyone has any information about this theft they’re urged to contact the police by dialling 101.
