A new Mayor and Mayoress for Pendle

Double gold Olympian Steven Burke Freeman of the Borough meets Pendle's new Mayor and Mayoress.
Pendle’s new Mayor, Councillor David Whalley from Nelson, will become our first citizen during the annual Mayor Making ceremony on Thursday 18th May at Nelson Town Hall.
Double gold Olympian Steven Burke will be attending the ceremony, as Freeman of the Borough.
Councillor Whalley, who was born in Colne, has represented the Southfield ward for the seven years and Vivary Bridge in Colne for eight years before that.
His wife, Barbara is from Nelson and will become Mayoress. Both the Mayor and Mayoress are retired.
Councillor Whalley worked in mental health for 14 years before retiring and prior to that he ran Pendle Hire Centre for many years.
Barbara, our new Mayoress, was a social work manager working for Lancashire County Council.
She will lead fundraising efforts for their chosen charities which are the Friends of Pendle’s parks groups.
They have set up a Crowd Funding initiative on Just Giving in a bid to raise £1,000 for Pendle’s Park Friends by September.
An evening of song, dance and drama has also been arranged at the Pendle Hippodrome in Colne on 30th September to raise funds.
“Pendle parks are among the best in Lancashire thanks to the support of the Park Friends groups,” said Councillor Whalley.
“Our aim is to raise as much money as possible to support their projects and we hope that more people will volunteer to support their efforts,” he said.
Councillor Rosemary Carroll who completes her mayoral year this week said:
“It has been a great honour and privilege to serve Pendle as Mayor this year.
“We have had a fantastic time and among the highlights have been the school visits showing the children of the borough what Pendle means and the rich history that we have.”
Together with her Mayoress Carol Belshaw Goulthorp, many successful fund raising events have been held over the last year.
Their chosen charities have been Pendle’s Samaritans, Pendle Dogs in Need, Pendle Women’s Refuge, Homestart - a local charity supporting families of young children and teenagers in need and North West Blood Bikes.
“We would like to thank everyone who has helped and supported us in raising money for these charities,” said Rosemary.
