Number One in aim to make Pendle Dementia friendly

Pendle Council’s new mayor has launched the initiative with Paul Gauntlett, chair of the Pendle Dementia Action Alliance and Victoria Huntriss of the Alzheimer’s Society.
This week is national Dementia Awareness Week and Pendle’s Dementia Action Alliance has announced ts plans to create a dementia friendly Pendle.
The Mayor of Pendle, Councillor David Whalley, who is Pendle's Dementia Champion, has launched a major initiative towards a dementia friendly Pendle as his first mayoral engagement.
“Pendle Council is working to make all our buildings dementia friendly, meeting the Alzheimer’s Society’s criteria” he announced.
“Our Contact Pendle centre at Number One Market Street is the first building in Nelson to be recognised as making good progress to become dementia friendly,” he stated.
“As Pendle’s first citizen I’m delighted to see the progress being made to make Nelson a dementia friendly town.
“We will support efforts to create dementia friendly townships right across Pendle,” he explained.
Dementia friendly towns include accessible buildings, public awareness and safe spaces where people with dementia can go should they need help and support when out and about.
Paul Gauntlett, chair of Pendle’s Dementia Action Alliance said:
“Throughout this year we’ll be working with our partners in the public, private and voluntary sectors to make sure buildings used by the general public in Pendle are committed to becoming dementia friendly.
To coincide with national Dementia Awareness Week, the Pendle Dementia Alliance will also be launching a newly updated guide to local services.
The guide will help people understand what support is available to people living with dementia in Pendle
A new legal and financial advice leaflet will also be launched this Friday.
Paul said: “We’ve been running a number of public events to raise awareness about dementia and provide support for people living with dementia and their carers.
“We’re planning more during the coming year.
“The new leaflet sharing legal and financial advice has been produced as a result of feedback from people attending our free sessions,” he explained.
Gill Dickson who helps to co-ordinate Pendle Council’s support on health issues including dementia said:
“Pendle’s Dementia Action Alliance is organising a short 7k Memory Walk in a bid to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society on Sunday 3rd September.
“Please come and join us!” She said.
The charity walk starts at Victoria Park pavilion, Nelson at 10.30am and will be meeting with Burnley’s group along the way, as they start at the Kingfisher Café at Reedley Marina at 10.30am.
