Bradley Soup success for Safe Space and Pendle Vale Mums 2 Mums

This month budding entrepreneurs took part in Bradley Soup – an idea from Detroit where people with business ideas can pitch their projects.
Local resident Samina Butt organised Bradley Soup as part of the Bradley Big Local funding supported by Rossina Tahir and Kaneez Chaudry.
The Lottery funded project is being run in partnership with Pendle Council and is designed to boost the community and neighbourhood in the Bradley area of Nelson.
It’s designed to bring together local talent, ambitions, skills and energy from individuals, groups and organisations who want to make their area an even better place to live.
The £500 winner of the Bradley Soup pitch was Safe Space Young People’s project for new equipment for a sensory area to help vulnerable young people relax and get into better night-time sleep patterns.
Waqas Arshad, Chair of Bradley Big Local, explained:
“Safe Space explained how young people in their supported accommodation often have chaotic routines which impact on things we take for guaranteed such as a good night’s sleep.
“This seriously impacts on their ability to engage in education, attend appointments, or get additional support as they aren’t fully alert due to lack of sleep.
“It will also reduce the possibility of anti-social behaviour, especially during the night, as vulnerable young people will be asleep as opposed to being out on the streets,” he added.
And Warburton’s who provided the bread for Bradley Soup were so impressed with Pendle Vale College’s Mums 2 Mums event they pledged £250 for sessions to teach women to ride a bike.
Fiona Callaghan from Pendle Vale supports the Mums 2 Mums group which is based at the College. She said:
“We discovered that nearly all the women in the group couldn’t ride a bike but would like to.
“With a small investment to pay for eight training sessions they’ll be able to enjoy a healthy activity with their families,” she explained.
Another round of Bradley Soup will take place in the autumn.
“In the meantime grants from £100 to £500 are available for groups, organisations and individuals keen to improve the quality of life in Bradley,” said Audrey Drinkwater, Pendle Council’s Senior Locality & Communities Officer.
“Those who didn’t win at Bradley Big Soup are also encouraged to apply,” she said.
