Published: Wednesday, 22nd March 2017

New ideas for improving the Bradley area of Nelson are welcome this Saturday 25th March as local residents are invited to a Bradley Big Local Open Day.

The open day is being held at the Grassroots Centre at St Philips, Leeds Road, Nelson and people are welcome to drop in from 11am – 3pm to find out about exciting plans for the area.

“A new round of funding opens this spring and we want more local people to be involved,” announced Waqas Arshad, Chair of Bradley Big Local .

“Grants from £100 to £500 are available and groups, organisations and individuals keen to improve the quality of life in our neighbourhood are being encouraged to apply,” he explained.

Bradley Big Local is working in partnership with Pendle Council on the lottery funded project for the Nelson neighbourhood.

Audrey Drinkwater, Pendle Council’s Senior Locality and Communities Officer said:

“At the open day we’re keen to hear from anyone with ideas on activities for children and young people and on sport and recreation for all ages.

“Grants can also be awarded for activities which bring people together from different backgrounds, ages and neighbourhoods,” she added.

“Ideas for projects or training that will develop people’s skills and experience to enable them to contribute to the local economy are also welcome,” she explained.

Waqas Arshad added:

“We’re also keen for local people to find out more about exciting new plans for Bradley which are getting underway and opportunities for getting involved.”

The new Bradley Big Local Projects include:

• Doubling the size of the play area next to the community centre off Regent Street Nelson with new equipment for
older children and an outdoor gym

• A new After School Support Education Service run with Pendle Vale College to offer specialist tuition in maths,
English and science to pupils in years 10 and 11

• Bradley Soup – an idea from Detroit where budding entrepreneurs can pitch their ideas for developing a small
business over a bowl of soup and get support.

“The Open Day is a great chance for local residents to meet the Bradley Big Local Team and talk to local people who are making a difference in Bradley,” said Waqa.

Anyone who can’t make the open day is welcome to contact Waqas Arshad on 07849 116972 or to contact Audrey Drinkwater at Audrey.drinkwater@pendle.gov.uk, telephone 01282 661339
