“Over 700 litter pickers in 28 groups across Pendle volunteered to take part – our best ever turn out!

“We’d like to give a huge thank you to everyone who helped out,” He added.

Pendle Council’s Neighbourhood Services co-ordinated the event in Pendle, encouraging local groups to get involved.

And Pendle schools, community groups, Nelson and Colne College and parish councils all came out in force to support the national Tidy Britain event.

Pendle Council provided volunteers with litterpickers, gloves and bags for rubbish for events over the Great British Spring Clean weekend – 3rd – 5th March.

And the Council safely disposed of the 350 bin bags of rubbish collected.

Pendle Council’s Management Team pitched in by picking up litter along the towpath below Northlight (Brierfield Mill) and alongside the canal towards Nelson.

During their lunch break, eight staff volunteered to help including Pendle Council’s Strategic Director Dean Langton and together they collected 8 bags of rubbish!

David Walker, Environmental Services Manager who organised the litter pick said:

“The group enjoyed giving up their time to take part on the Great British Spring Clean.  We certainly left an area of historical interest and natural beauty better than we found it.

“We urge people to help keep Pendle clean and tidy by clearing up after their dogs and taking their litter home,” he added.

“Don’t forget there’s a £75 fine for littering and dog fouling!” He warned.

Anyone who’d like to continue to help in doing their bit to improve Pendle’s environment can volunteer to help all year round.

Barrowford resident Peter Smith was one of the organisers of a litter pick in Nelson under the bridge linking Reedyford Road with Scotland Road.

He worked with Nelson and Colne College, the Good Life Project, Friends of Pendle Water and Newground.

Peter said:

“It’s important that more residents help Pendle Council’s efforts to keep Pendle tidy.

“That’s why I started the group PICK UP FOR PENDLE, to encourage other people to do their bit,” he explained.
