Want to find out how we’re protecting Pendle from flooding?

Pendle residents and businesses that have been affected by flooding are encouraged to come along to a meeting to hear about progress on flood alleviation measures in the borough.
The meeting which is on Thursday 2 March at 6.30pm at New Road Community Centre in Earby is being led by Pendle Council.
The Council will be joined by representatives from the Environment Agency and Yorkshire Water.
All of the organisations will give updates on schemes such as work on culverts, strengthening sewers, a community flood plan and a major flood alleviation study in Earby.
They will update on progress on the flood defence work at Ghyll Meadows in Barnoldswick.
And they will highlight future plans which will make Pendle more flood resilient.
Councillor David Whipp, who leads on flooding issues for Pendle, said: “Some progress is being made and this is a chance for residents to hear about it and comment on what’s happening.
“We also have some bad news/good news on flood resilience grants.
“The bad news is that not everyone took up individual grants to help protect their homes. But the good news is that we’ve persuaded the powers that be to invest the funding in community resilience work.”
These measures could include:
- investing in temporary flood barriers which could be put in place at short notice
- buying pumps which will help to remove flood water
- creating better access to sandbags
- raising walls by Earby Beck
- flood proofing Victoria Mill which houses 14 businesses.
Councillor Whipp added: “The Environment Agency will give information about their planned work on Victoria Clough Culvert in Earby which is due to start by the end of March.
“And they’ll explain the flood modelling they’ve been doing to understand what further work needs to be done.
“Yorkshire Water has already replaced a section of a collapsed sewer in Victoria Road in Earby and they’ll give an update on additional work they’ve identified.
“Ghyll Meadows residents can learn about progress with flood defence work for their area.”
