“If you answered yes to these questions you should take part in The Great British Spring Clean,” said Councillor David Clegg who leads on Environmental Services.

“Residents rightly complain about litter and fly tipping, but we don’t have the resources to clear it all up,” he said.

“We need support from local people if we’re to live in a clean, litter free Pendle we can all be proud of,” he stressed.

“That’s why we’re calling on individuals, voluntary groups, church and mosque groups and schools to do their bit for Pendle.

“We have a fantastic community spirit and we need as many volunteers as we can get

 during this national spring clean weekend from Friday 3rd – Sunday 5th March,” he said.

Audrey Drinkwater from the Council’s Localities Team said: 

“We can support groups who don’t have any equipment with rubbish bags, gloves, and litter pickers.  

“We can also let them have a risk assessment for their litter pick to ensure everyone keeps safe,” she added.

“People can help by joining a regular volunteer litter picking group, like Pick up for Pendle or Barnoldswick Glitterati, who do some tremendous work across Pendle.

“Please contact me for details,” she said.

“Together we’ll make a difference, but the problems won’t stop overnight,” warned Councillor Clegg

Residents can also tell Pendle Council about regular offenders or problem areas for litter, fly tipping and dog fouling by filling in a form on our website  www.pendle.gov.uk/report_a_problem   or calling us on 01282 661743.

Local people have helped us to prosecute people when we bring cases to court, by providing statements.

“Everything from carelessly tossing litter out of cars, not clearing up after a dog, leaving bin bags out in the street for days,  to fly tipping are all environmental crimes,” stated Councillor Clegg.

In 2016 Pendle Council issued 245 fixed penalty notices ranging from £75 to £400 and 12 people appeared in court and received fines totalling £3,390.

A further 11 people are awaiting trial.
