Preventing youth homelessness funding for Pendle

Pendle has been selected as a new ‘trailblazer’ area to prevent young people becoming homeless.
“We’ll be part of a pilot programme as Lancashire is one of 28 areas in the UK chosen to try out new approaches,” explained Leader of Pendle Council, Councillor Mohammed Iqbal.
“Lancashire is getting £735,000 of funding and young people in Pendle will benefit and be part of the new programme,” he said.
Councillor Asjad Mahmood leads on housing and he explained:
“The funding is designed to tackle youth homelessness by preventing family breakdown before things reach a crisis point.
“It will include early intervention services for 14 – 25 year olds at risk of eviction and support for young people and their families,” he said.
The funding will provide mediation support for young people, their parents and carers.
It will also be used for short term safe places for young people to stay whilst work continues to help them return home or to prepare to leave home in a safe and planned way.
A new interactive website offering practical advice and support, including maps to emergency shelters, will also be launched.
“Pendle Council’s Housing Needs Team is already involved in helping young vulnerable people faced with homelessness, including those affected by domestic violence,” added Councillor Iqbal.
“The aim for the East Lancashire pilot is for different agencies to work together even more closely and for our pilot programme to be rolled out across Lancashire and the UK,” he added.
