More Syrian refugee families for Pendle?

More Syrian families could be resettled in Pendle next year.
Executive Councillors at their meeting on 8th December are being asked to make a commitment to take ten more families by the start of the autumn school term in September 2017.
Pendle is one of four areas in Lancashire to be providing homes for Syrian families.
Councillor Mohammed Iqbal, Leader of Pendle Council, said:
“We pledged our commitment to the Government to re-house up to 20 families from war- torn Syria a year ago.
“We have fulfilled half of that pledge thanks to good partnership working and a package of support for the families who came to Pendle in the autumn.”
Pendle Council and other organisations, including people from voluntary and faith groups, have been working with Lancashire County Council.
“We’re proud to be fulfilling an agreement made in Lancashire to accept our fair share of Syrian refugees,” explained Councillor Mohammed Iqbal, Leader of Pendle Council.
Ten small families moved to Pendle in September and November this year as part of the Syrian Resettlement Programme to help people who’ve suffered the harrowing effects of the war.
Help provided has included enrolling refugee children at schools and getting parents onto English as a Second Language courses.
“I’d like to thank everyone involved in giving the families a warm welcome, including people who kindly donated furniture and clothes, or helped them to settle in and find their way around.
“I’m relieved we are now in a position to complete our commitment and offer ten more families a safe place to live.
“Our plan is to bring ten empty homes back into use to accommodate them,” he added.
“We are helping to co-ordinate efforts, but we do not incur any costs to re-house the families,” he stressed.
