Pendle Borough Council is working with Nelson high street shop owners to enhance the town centre’s appearance and promote a healthier environment for shoppers and businesses.

Shop owners are being asked to maintain all the outside areas of their business by ensuring they remain free from waste.

This will include back yards, back streets and the front of shops, including the pavement.

Officers from the Council’s Operational Services Team visited shops this week to offer support and answer any questions owners may have about waste and recycling.

Councillor Asjad Mahmood, Leader of Pendle Borough Council, said: “It is important that the main high street looks presentable for shoppers and visitors to the town.

“Small, practical actions can make a big difference, such as managing waste responsibly and keeping the area around their premises clean.

“This will help to create a welcoming environment for customers, increase foot traffic, enhance sales and promote community pride and responsibility.

“We are happy to work with businesses, so that together we can make a difference!”

Shop owners will be asked to regularly check and clean the area surrounding their shop; encourage customers to dispose of their litter properly and report any issues promptly.

Councillor Zafar Ali, Pendle Borough Council’s Operational Portfolio Holder, added: “Under Section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, all businesses, including shops, have a legal duty of care for the waste they produce.

“They need to take responsibility for their waste from the point it is created until it is transferred to an authorised waste carrier or facility.

“Through this initiative, we are hoping to achieve this by ensuring shop owners manage their waste correctly.”
