The programme has assisted 38 businesses in Nelson over the last four years with grants totalling £1.9million.

The grants have helped create over 200 full-time jobs and safeguarded the jobs of an additional 500 people in full-time employment.

The grants were given as part of the Business Resilience and Growth Project - one of seven projects within the £25m Nelson Town Deal – which was designed to promote sustainable growth in the area, create jobs and provide new opportunities for local people.

Grants of up to £100,000 were available for eligible Nelson businesses to take advantage of to use for investment in new machinery, initiatives to lower CO2 emissions or energy consumption or building improvements to support growth.

Councillor Asjad Mahmood, Leader of Pendle Borough Council and Nelson Town Deal board member, said: “I’m delighted that we have been able to help so many Nelson businesses thrive and grow.

“The funding was to support upcoming projects which created jobs and improved productivity.

“It is very rewarding knowing we have helped these businesses, which provide a vast spectrum of trades to Pendle and beyond, with a helping hand to grow, as well as create new jobs and help more people into employment.”

Businesses who benefited from a grant include:

One of Pendle’s biggest employers - furniture manufacturer Buoyant Upholstery Ltd, on Hallam Road in Nelson – received a grant of £100,000 towards installing 700 solar panels onto its warehouse roof in a bid to cut its energy costs and keep reducing its carbon footprint.

The money also went towards generating 17 new full-time jobs and safeguarding 35 existing full-time jobs.

Clarkson Coatings Ltd, on Lomeshaye Industrial Estate, which is a processor and supplier of flame-retardant treatments for upholstery fabrics, received a grant of £59,000 to buy a new laminator and create nine new full-time jobs.

Agenda Boxes & Packaging Ltd received a grant of £32,000 towards a new CAD machine and to concrete the yard at their premises on Clayton Street to make it more useable.

The grant also helped to generate three new full-time jobs and safeguard a further 11 full-time jobs.

Precision Tube & Laser Ltd received £100,000 towards the cost of a £400,000 laser cutter.

The grant also helped to generate 11 new full-time jobs at the business premises on Pendle Industrial Estate, Southfield Street, Nelson.

Stephen Barnes, Chair of the Nelson Town Deal Board, added: “We are delighted to have been able to help almost 40 local businesses to future-proof their organisations.

“It’s amazing that we have these small businesses thriving in Pendle, supplying their wares all over the country.”
