Problems Paying Your Council Tax?

How we can help

Woman surrounded by bills and demands

Council tax bills are sent every year before the 16th March, and throughout the year to any households that have moved home or had a change in their circumstances. If you think your bill is wrong, please contact us immediately.

The Council has a Collection Policy which explains how bills are issued, and the methods for collecting Council Tax when instalments are not paid in time. The policy explains why reminders and other recovery documents are issued. We also have a Bailiffs' Code Of Practice available too.

We can be contacted at any stage to discuss your council tax account. You should inform us as soon as possible if you are struggling to pay as we may be able to tell you if you qualify for any discounts, exemptions, benefits or reliefs that are available. We may also be able to make an alternative payment arrangement.

We encourage payment be Direct Debit. Not only is it cheaper for the Council to collect Council Tax by this method, you can also now pay by 12 monthly instalments (April to March). This is ONLY available to Direct Debit payers.

If you require further independent advice, please see our page which shows the local agencies who can offer you help.
