Petrol Leak in Nelson

Published Wednesday 10th March 10

Yesterday (Tuesday 9th March), at around 5.00pm, 11 houses in Lime Street and Every Street, Nelson, were evacuated by Lancashire Police and Lancashire Fire and Rescue.

The evacuation was a result of a petrol leak from the Shell filling station on Manchester Road. It's thought the petrol had got into drains and watercourses running under some homes in the area.

As a result, fumes were travelling into people's homes in the Whitefield area, Lomeshaye village and as far as Chapel House Road and beyond.

Pendle Council opened a rest centre at Whitefield Community Centre for evacuees.

Just one family needed overnight accommodation and Pendle Council organised this.

Other evacuees chose to stay with friends or family.

Transco tested the affected properties for fumes and, as a precaution, switched off their gas and electricity supplies.

The properties had their supplies switched back on this morning.

Staff from Lancashire County Council were also on site yesterday flushing gullies and helping to get cars moved.

The Environment Agency is currently checking the drains and watercourses for contamination.

Pendle Council and Lancashire Fire and Rescue were on the scene until 11.30am today and remain in close contact with the area.

The fumes have now reduced dramatically; the rest centre has been closed and the majority of people have been able to go back to their own homes, with the exception of three families on Lime Street, who should be able to return this afternoon.

However, if anyone smells gas or petrol in their homes, this is the advice:

  • Open all windows
  • Do not switch on any lights
  • Do not light any flames
  • Call Transco's emergency number on 0800 111 999
