Regenerating Pendle – The Next Steps

Published Saturday 7th November 09

A £500,000 boost to improve more properties at key sites in Nelson and Brierfield has been announced.

It's all part of Pendle Council's drive to regenerate these towns.

The homes proposed for what's known as "block improvement" are on Leeds Road in Nelson and on Glenway, Brierfield.

The work comprises external improvements and repairs to the front of properties, including stone cleaning.

The aim is to improve the gateways or entry and exit routes into Pendle's towns.

The project will be financed, subject to approval, with funding from Elevate, Pennine Lancashire's housing market renewal and regeneration agency.

A report to Pendle Council's Executive said that this work would "maximise the impact of work currently underway or completed on the Gateways."

The Council's Housing Regeneration Services Manager, Julie Whittaker, said:

"I'm really pleased we're able to make more improvements to these key areas. This adds to the impressive work already underway."

Councillor Sonia Robinson, Executive member for Housing Regeneration, added:

"The new look will bring new pride and market confidence to the areas and encourage further investment."

In recent years extensive work has been completed to gateway properties in Nelson and Brierfield.

Combined with investments and renewal projects such as the opening of the ACE (Arts, Culture and Enterprise Centre) in Nelson and the new Memorial Square in front of Nelson Library, the intention is to help revitalise local towns and boost the local economy.

At present a £1m improvement scheme is being carried out to eight blocks of houses on Leeds Road , Bradley.

The Council also recently completed a pioneering project on Every Street, Nelson where two long derelict terraces were restored and modernised.

The properties are now being offered for sale.

It's now proposed that a further £500,000 is allocated to refurbish derelict properties on Stanley Street in Whitefield.

The Council also intends to spend £300,000 buying up further properties under its Improvement For Sale scheme.

Purchases will be targeted in areas where block improvement work has or will be carried out. Once improved the houses will be offered for sale by the Council.
