Thank You To Pendle Team 34 - Some Very Special Pendle Teenagers
Published Thursday 22nd October 09
The achievements of a group of public-spirited Pendle teenagers has been celebrated at Colne’s Waterside Millennium Green.
The event marked the completion of a demanding community project to transform part of the Green.
The teenagers, all members of Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service Prince's Trust Pendle Team 34, had spent two weeks working there.
Pendle Council's Neighbourhood Management team put the Prince's Trust in touch with the Millennium Green Trustees.
Petra Wilson, Community Development Worker with the Colne Neighbourhood Management service, said:
"This shows the good work the Prince's Trust Team do and it was an opportunity to link the young people with a local community group. These young people have worked really hard."
Pendle Mayor Councillor Marjorie Adam thanked the Team for its effort, saying:
"It's heartening to hear of young people doing this kind of good and rewarding work. They should all be proud of what they've achieved. Keep up the good work."
Her views were echoed by Mr David Rose, a Trustee of the Green, who said their work had been inspiring and would greatly improve the Green. He commented: "I hear too much about troublesome youth - and I think it's mainly lies."
Meanwhile Waterside Councillor Tony Greaves added: "The team has done great work!"
Team leader Jackie Bird said that at times the project had been really hard work. But the volunteers had taken the message to heart that if you work through obstacles and remain committed you can achieve your goal.
The Team programme is a 12 week personal development course which helps build confidence and teamworking skills, whilst members work towards nationally recognised qualifications.
She said:
"Five weeks ago they didn't know each other - to take on board a project of this size and complete it in two weeks is fantastic."
For Christina Paul,18, the experience had been very worthwhile. She said:
"I'd not done anything like it before and I just enjoyed everything."
Charlie Murgatroyd, 19, said:
"I enjoyed it."
The celebration event had made him feel proud and he said he hoped other community volunteers would see the progress made and keep up the good work at the Green.
Neighbourhood Management funded the celebration and invited members of Colne Youth Forum to attend the event.
