Local residents are getting set to help transform the external appearance of their homes and streets - thanks to Pendle Council’s latest Up My Street project.

The first Up My Street initiative saw residents in Nelson and Colne help to  improve the external appearance of the front of their homes and gardens.

They pooled resources, ideas and labour, with support from Pendle Council and Elevate, the Housing Market Renewal agency for Pennine Lancashire.

It was such a success that councillors voted to extend the project.

Now five streets in Brierfield, Nelson and Colne are to take part.

They were chosen following an open invitation for interested residents to contact the Council.

Rob Mooney, Pendle Council's Neighbourhood Manager for Nelson said: "We had talks with residents and councillors and held public meetings. The streets that were chosen were the ones where everyone was enthusiastic about the project and residents wanted to be involved."

He continued:  "Up My Street is all about a community working together to improve its own area. It shows what a difference can be made if everyone makes a contribution and works together with a common aim."

Modest funding is also being provided by Pendle Council, with support from Pennine Lancashire's Housing Market Renewal agency Elevate.

The Council's Environmental Action Group will also work on the project.

The five streets are:

 Parts of Halifax Rd, Brierfield,
 Bradshaw Street, Nelson
 Hildrop Road, Nelson
 Parts of Knotts Lane, Colne
 Green Road, Colne

During recent weeks Martin Proffitts of Proffitts - Investing In Communities has been consulting and working with residents to identify preferred improvements.

These will range from transforming front gardens and installing new railings and doors to planting containers with bulbs and bedding plants.

Work is due to start this month, (February, 2009).

Martin, who is working on the project with staff from Pendle Council's Neighbourhood Management team said: "To keep the costs down residents will be involved in a few planting days and are keen to pick up those paint brushes. We're all looking forward to making and seeing a real difference."

Councillor Tony Greaves, Executive member for Housing Market Renewal on Pendle Council said: "We are using part of the Elevate funding to help residents spruce up these streets in different parts of Pendle. I hope the Council will keep this scheme going in future years."
