Birkett’s celebrates 65 years in Colne Market!

Published Wednesday 22nd February 12

A long-standing family run business in Colne Market has celebrated 65 years of trading.

Birkett's, which specialises in ladies' and gents' clothing, lingerie and hosiery, net curtains and a dry cleaning service, started life in the old market down Dockray Street.

They moved to the new Market Hall when it opened in the early 1970s and are the only stall from the original market that has stood the test of time.

Gertrude Birkett originally set up the business on 22nd February 1947 and her son Maurice joined her four years later.

When Maurice retired last year after 60 years in the business, his nephew Andrew Birkett took on the family business.

It's certainly a family affair as Andrew's daughter has a babywear stall in the market and her partner has recently opened a shoes and accessories stall.

Andrew said:

"Over the years, trading has become more difficult with the arrival of the big stores and supermarkets.

"We have managed to survive by focusing on niche, quality products and providing high levels of customer service.

"We are fortunate to have a loyal customer base that have supported us over the years and we will continue to provide them with the friendly service and quality products they expect and deserve."

Ian Varley, Market Manager, added:

"I'd like to congratulate Birkett's for this fantastic achievement.

"65 years of trading is amazing, especially in these difficult times.

"They should be commended for their dedication and staying power."

The Birkett family celebrated with customers and fellow market traders by laying on a buffet.

Market Manager Ian Varley also presented the family with a celebration cake iced: 'Congratulations on 65 years at Colne Market'.

And local press photographers turned up to take the family's photograph to mark this wonderful achievement.
