Remembering our war heroes on 11th November
Published Monday 7th November 11
People in Pendle are invited to pay their respects to those who lost their lives in past wars by taking part in a two minute silence on Remembrance Day, Friday 11th November.
The 11-11-11 Campaign marks the date that the First World War ended, and encourages everyone to respectively remember heroes from World Wars and other conflicts.
Councillor Mike Blomeley, Leader of Pendle Council, said:
"Maroons will be fired at 11am on Friday 11th November to mark the start and end of the two minute silence.
"They will be fired in Nelson, Colne and Barnoldswick and have a sound range of three miles.
"We hope that people in all parts of Pendle will be able to hear the shots and join with us in remembering the brave men and women who have given their lives for our country."
As the 11th November falls on a workday, Pendle Council and Liberata staff and visitors to Council buildings are also invited to observe the silence to mark their respects.
Leading up to the two minute silence, the Mayor of Pendle, Councillor Nadeem Ahmed, will attend a special dedication ceremony at the Colne War Memorial in Albert Road.
Organised by Colne British Legion, the ceremony commemorates the recent addition of Sergeant John Baxter's name to the memorial.
The ceremony will begin at 10.45am and Sgt Baxter's family have been invited to attend.
The following Sunday, 13th November, is Remembrance Sunday.
On this day there are services taking place in Barnoldswick, Barrowford, Brierfield, Blacko, Colne, Earby, Fence, Foulridge, Higham, Nelson, Newchurch and Trawden.
Pendle residents are welcome to attend and various councillors will be laying wreaths on behalf of Pendle Council.
For more details on these services, look in the website events calendar.
On Remembrance Sunday His Worship the Mayor of Pendle, Councillor Nadeem Ahmed, will be paying his respects by attending four wreath-laying ceremonies across Pendle.
He will lay wreaths on behalf of Pendle Council at:
- Colne Cenotaph at 11am
- the War Memorial in Barrowford Park at 12 noon
- Nelson Cenotaph at 2pm
- And Barnoldswick Cenotaph, shortly after 3pm.
