Aidan says Mix It Together!

Published Thursday 27th October 11

From next week Pendle residents no longer need to separate their paper and cardboard when putting it out for recycling.

And helping spread the message is 11 year old Aidan Stephenson from Colne.

Aidan's larger than life-sized picture is going on the side of a new Council bin wagon, showing Pendle residents that they can mix their paper and cardboard together.

Aidan, who is a Year 7 pupil at Pendle Vale, said:

"I had fun modelling for the photograph.

"It's going to be weird seeing my face on a bin wagon, but it's pretty exciting!"

The wagon is one of three refuse collection vehicles new to Pendle Council's fleet which are cheaper to run and kinder to the environment.

Councillor James Starkie, Executive Member for Waste, said:

"By changing some of our refuse and recycling vehicles we are saving £8,000 per year. And we'll save more money on fuel as these new vehicles use less.

"But the changes to paper and cardboard recycling are really about making it easier for Pendle people to recycle.

"They can mix together all their junk mail, newspapers, cereal boxes, cardboard food packaging and other paper and cardboard products either into a cardboard box or their green recycling box.

"What could be simpler?"

If residents don't already have a green recycling box, they can put out their paper and cardboard recycling in an old cardboard box - such as a cereal box or a larger cardboard box.

The cardboard boxes will be taken away to be recycled too, and residents can use another one for their next scheduled collection.

But if they don't have a cardboard box, it won't stop them recycling - they can put out their paper and cardboard in a plastic bag. The recycling collectors will take plastic bags away, and dispose of them separately.

Carole Taylor, the Council's Recycling Co-ordinator, said:

"Currently Pendle residents recycle around 38% of their waste.

"We're hoping this change to how paper and cardboard are collected will increase our recycling rates even more."
