Local Hero Awards - Our Volunteer of the Year award winner

Published Monday 3rd October 11

Esther Williams, aged 14 from Pendle, has won Volunteer of the Year at this year's Local Hero Awards organised by local radio station 2BR.

The award acknowledges the 300 hours of work she's done over the last year to give kids in Pendle more sporting opportunities.

Sponsored by Pendle Partnership and Pendle Council, the category celebrates the difference volunteers make in their area.

Esther volunteers with Pendle Leisure Trust and does a range of activities, including coaching at a netball club.

The Colne Park High School student said: "I really do enjoy it even though it takes a lot of time!

"It makes me happy to be recognised for what I've done."

Joe Cooney, Sports Development Manager for Pendle Leisure Trust, said: "Esther is part of our Pendle Volunteer Programme and she's an amazing volunteer.

"She worked through the summer holidays on our activity programme for children and she volunteers every Friday night at our session for disabled children.

"She really deserves this award - she has given so much time to this worthwhile project."

Anyone aged 14 - 25 is welcome to volunteer to help with our sporting programme like Esther has done.
