Recycling past and present explored in Earby exhibition

Published Friday 9th September 11

If you’re interested in learning about recycling from the 19th century to the present day, pay a visit to the Earby and District Local History Society's exhibition between 17th and 24th September.

Pendle Council has contributed to the 'Recycling Past And Present' exhibition, staged in Earby Town Council Offices in Victoria Road , highlighting the changes in what households throw away over the last century.

Robert Abel, Chairman of the Earby and District Local History Society, said:

"Within our group we were discussing wartime history and came to thinking about how recycling was done then.

"We felt we could find enough interesting material to pull together an exhibition, and the Council helped us with information to bring it right up to date.

"The exhibition looks at attitudes to and methods of recycling form the late 19th century to the present day.

"This includes early examples of electricity generation from waste and heat recycling and the problems of waste disposal over the years.

"It also considers the necessity for recycling during the two world wars, the post World War Two throw away society and the 21st century's reawakening to the need to reduce and recycle waste."

Carole Taylor, Waste and Recycling Co-ordinator, said:

"The Earby and District Local History Society came to us with their idea of putting on a recycling exhibition.

"We've contributed some information about the way the Council collects recycling from homes and which container residents should put them in.

"And we've added some interesting stuff about what happens to Pendle's paper, cardboard, glass, cans, plastic bottles and garden waste when it goes to Farington Technology Park in Leyland for recycling."

Also in the exhibition are some photographs of 1960s refuse collection vehicles, plus an interesting look at how the contents of the average bin have changed over the years.

Councillor James Starkie, who represents recycling in Pendle, said:

"The Council is happy to contribute to this exhibition which highlights the recycling methods that were used in bygone times.

"For more information about Pendle Council's modern day recycling collections, visit www.pendle.gov.uk/recycling."

The exhibition is open 11am to 4pm on Saturday 17th and Monday 19th to Saturday 24th September inclusive.

Refreshments will be available and there will also be a book stall.
