Pink Southend-On-Sea recycling sacks nothing to do with Pendle Council

Published Tuesday 26th July 11

Pendle Council wishes to make it clear that it has no involvement with the company that is currently delivering pink recycling sacks to homes across Pendle.

Last week Pendle Skips, a company based in Burnley, delivered the pink sacks and promotional leaflets about a residential recycling collection service, to homes in Reedley and Barrowford.

This prompted many residents to call the Council's contact centre.

The Council is keen to clarify that it has not distributed these, nor is it working in partnership with the company.

Carole Taylor, Recycling Co-ordinator, said:

"Many residents have been confused by this, and understandably so.

"The company is called Pendle Skips and the leaflet offers a collection service for unwanted clothes, shoes, toys and jewellery.

"But the pink sacks they deliver are branded Southend-On-Sea Council, some 270 miles away!

"It is even more confusing in that the pink sacks ask for plastics, cans, paper and card, which is contrary to the leaflet provided by Pendle Skips.

"We have alerted Southend-On-Sea Council to this use of their recycling sacks, and they are investigating how this has happened.

"We have also made some enquiries and established that Pendle Skips is a legitimate company with a licence to carry waste."

Philip Mousdale, Executive Director (Environmental & Recreation Services), went on:

"It's for our residents to decide if they wish to use the pink sacks from Pendle Skips, but we would remind them that the Council already provides a doorstep collection service for unwanted clothes and shoes, as well as a range of other recyclables.

"We're keen to clear up the confusion that's been caused by the conflicting information on the sack and on the leaflet delivered by Pendle Skips.

"If anyone wants any more information about our recycling collections, they can call (01282) 661743 or visit www.pendle.gov.uk/recycling."
