Nelson's Monopoly inspired board gets underway!

Published Tuesday 19th July 11

Nelson will be transformed when unusual and colourful vehicles come to the town centre to celebrate the re-opening of its high street.

And local artist Roger Hesketh needs your help to create his own unusual 'art car' so he can take part in the Nelson Art Car Parade on Saturday August 20th.

Hanna Latty, Town Centres Officer, said: "Roger has come up with a fantastic idea of creating a giant Monopoly inspired board which will be transported on a tricycle.

"Monopoly is one of the nation's favourite board games and this is a really great way to celebrate your favourite parts of the town!"

Roger, who lives in Brierfield, added: "To make this something we can all be proud of, I'd really like as many people as possible to send me interesting photos of Nelson.

"It could be a close up of a well known landmark or a picture of a particular place or building you like.

"Your picture could make it onto my giant interactive Monopoly style board which will be the focal point of my 'art car'."

Roger will be in Nelson Town Centre on Friday 22nd July from 12noon to encourage people to help him create Nelson's very own Monopoly inspired board.

He'll have 2ft versions of the original playing pieces with him and you'll be able to have your photo taken with them - you never know, you could appear on the board!

Roger added: "Once the board has been completed, it will be about 2m square.

"Come and see me in the pit stop area before and after the parades and challenge your friends and family to a game!"

Nelson Art Car Parade will celebrate the completion of Nelson High Street on 20th August between 10.30am and 4pm.

As well as Walk the Plank's famous Art Car Parade there'll also be a town crier, street theatre, music performances, poetry and local exhibitions to further surprise and entertain visitors to the event.

And the Shuttle - a dramatic sculptural reminder of Nelson's weaving heritage - will be officially unveiled.

The completion of Nelson's High Street is a huge step forward for the town and one which deserves celebrating.

Brian Cookson, Director (Regeneration), who has overseen the work on the high street, said: "This is the latest in a number of really positive developments for the town - a huge investment which has provided a high quality environment, of which Nelson can be proud for many years to come."

Once the multi-million pound scheme is complete, Nelson Town centre will have an exciting new layout with a road running through it, something the Council and local traders have wanted for years.

It'll also be pedestrian-friendly - the overall effect will be a tree-lined boulevard, with wonderful seating areas in the central space for visitors to enjoy events or just watch the world go by.

Councillor Mike Blomeley who oversees Pendle's Economic Development, said: "Creating a giant Nelson inspired Monopoly board is a fun way to get involved in the town centre opening event.

"It's another way to bring the town to life and get everyone behind it, talking it up.

"We know there are many budding photographers in Nelson, so please get your favourite images of the town to Roger!"
