On the move and active – a new leisure strategy for Pendle

Published Monday 11th July 11

People will have more chance to enjoy active leisure activities in Pendle if a new strategy is approved by Pendle Council’s Executive on 21 July.

Called On the move and active in Pendle, the strategy aims to get more people of all ages involved in sport and physical leisure activities.

A team of people including volunteers from local sports clubs and staff from Pendle Council and the Pendle Leisure Trust have worked together on the new plan.

It's designed to tackle the problem of Pendle having a low percentage (only 25%) of people who are active in our borough.

However, research has also shown that almost half of those surveyed (48%) would like to do more physical activity.

Councillor Mike Blomeley, Leader of Pendle Council said:

"This Strategy has been devised to find more ways to encourage people to enjoy their leisure time more actively.

"Research shows that over half the population (57%) in Pendle leads a life involving little or no exercise or physical activity," he explained.

"We are working in partnership with other organisations to improve the quality of life for Pendle's residents.

"It's vital for health as well as being a good way to meet people and enjoy life more," he added.

The Strategy which the Executive are being asked to approve includes:

* actions to increase the number of volunteers who help out at community sessions at local sports clubs

* helping more local clubs get Club Mark - the national seal of approval

* increasing the number of schools achieving Healthy Schools status.

Pendle Council's Gill Dickson who helped to bring the Strategy together said:

"People in Pendle's Sport and Physical Activity Alliance (SPAA) are working together to encourage a wide range of people of all ages and backgrounds to get more active.

"Pendle's SPAA is a network of like minded organisations which are working to increase residents' involvement in sport and physical leisure activities.

"It's been going for about four years and members include Pendle Leisure Trust, Pendle Council, NHS East Lancashire and the Youth Service.

"If agreed this month, we'll put the Strategy into action to try to make a positive difference to many people's lives in Pendle," she pledged.
