Nelson's art car parade fanfares re-opening of high street

Published Tuesday 5th July 11

Nelson will be transformed when unusual and colourful vehicles come to the town centre to fanfare the re-opening of the high street!

Preparations are now well underway for the family fun day which promises to have something for everyone.

It's taking place on Saturday August 20th between 10.30am and 4pm in the town centre.

Walk the Plank's famous Art Car Parade has been enjoyed at events in Edinburgh, Manchester and Blackpool.

And in Nelson it promises to surprise and delight audiences with a cavalcade of vehicles transformed into colourful works of art.

There'll also be a Town Crier, street theatre, music performances, poetry and local exhibitions to further surprise and entertain visitors to the event.

If you're itching to get creative then here's a great opportunity...

Pendle Council is encouraging anyone who wants to come up with their own art car idea - be it a car, bike or even a Shank's pony version - to get in touch.

And if you're interested in performing, selling your wares or have any other suggestions, the team behind the event is all ears!

Hanna Latty, Town Centres Officer, said: "The completion of Nelson's High Street is a huge step forward for the town and one which deserves celebrating.

"We want everyone to get behind us and put the date in their diaries.

"We'd like to see as many people as possible on Nelson's new High Street enjoying this event for all the family."

Brian Cookson, Director (Regeneration), who has overseen the work on the high street, added:

"Everyone knows that town centres have been having a tough time recently, and there's no denying that Nelson has faced some real challenges.

"However this is the latest in a number of really positive developments for the town - a huge investment which has provided a high quality environment, of which Nelson can be proud for many years to come.

"We now need everyone to get behind the town, talking up Nelson, so we can attract more people.

"That will in turn bring in more shops and other businesses, as the word spreads that Nelson has a modern and attractive town centre that is worth visiting!"

Once the multi-million pound scheme is complete, Nelson Town centre will have an exciting new layout with a road running through it, something the Council and local traders have wanted for years.

It'll also be pedestrian-friendly - the overall effect will be a tree-lined boulevard, with wonderful seating areas in the central space for visitors to enjoy events or just watch the world go by.

And, of course, The Shuttle - a dramatic sculptural reminder of Nelson's weaving heritage - will be unveiled.

Councillor Mike Blomeley who oversees Pendle's Economic Development, said: "This exciting scheme will improve the shopping experience in Nelson and make the most of the area at the heart of the town.

"We hope it will also attract new businesses to the town too.

"Thank you to everyone who has been affected for your patience since work started over 12 months ago.

"I hope you'll agree it was worth it!"
