Bonnie Colne Blooms Again
Published Wednesday 29th June 11
You may have noticed in recent years that Colne is blooming once again and this is due to the work of a small dedicated group of volunteers who call themselves "Colne in Bloom".
Once again the town is preparing itself for the "Britian In Bloom" Competition. Many people think that the "competition is all about flowers, but marks are awarded under three main headings: Horticultural Achievement, Environmental Responsibility and Community Involvement.
The horticultural achievement is indeed the flowers around the town and parks, environmental responsibility covers every thing from re-cycling to local nature reserves and Community involvement represents all local groups and their involvement with Colne in Bloom
In 2008 our hard work paid off and we were awarded first prize in the large town category, this was followed by a similar success in 2009 along with the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Silver Gilt medal and in 2010 we again won the Best Large Town and were awarded the prestigious RHS Gold medal - some achievement after only seven years in the competition,. This was coupled with being nominated to represent the North West in the Britain in Bloom Competition. This is equivalent to being promoted into the Premiere division!
2011 will be a very challenging year for Colne in Bloom and we are all hard at work planning for some very special displays around the town which will hopefully see us achieve even greater things.
It is all hard work but very rewarding and great fun so if you would like to join us and help Colne Bloom why not give Louise Cooper a ring on 01282 661236. You do not need any special skills just loads of enthusiasm. I look forward to giving you an update next month on how we are getting on!
