School children use greenfingers for a new garden in Nelson

Local children from Whitefield Primary School will be helping a garden take root in Nelson's new town centre.

Local children from Whitefield Primary School will be helping a garden take root in Nelson's new town centre.

They'll be planting herbs and other plants grown in Lancashire to bring a green look to the improved heart of town in time for its summer re-opening.

Debbie Taylor from Pendle Council who had the idea said: "The children will help to create a lovely fresh look to the front of the indoor market."

"I was inspired by the nationally acclaimed Incredible Edible in Todmorden," she explained.

"To make it less costly to look after, I've included lots of hardy herbs which come again every year, like chives, camomile, lavender, catmint and curry plants.

"But I'm not encouraging people to eat them," she warned.

"The planters contain a mix of plants and a lot of them are not edible.

"So just enjoy the look and the smell, which will be lovely, especially after one of our Lancashire showers!"

Councillor Mike Blomeley, Leader of Pendle Council said: "It's great that local children can play their part in creating what will be a radically improved beautifully designed town centre.

"As the garden gets well established, I'm hoping the children will be able to come back and see how their work and their town is flourishing.

"It will be another great contribution to making our town centre a really attractive place to enjoy, visit and shop in.  I'm pleased with how it's shaping up", he added.

Daryl Wilkinson, Geography Co-ordinator at Whitefield Infant School, said: "All our children come from Nelson so it means a lot that they were asked to get involved in helping to regenerate Nelson.

"They'll be able to walk through the town and be able to say 'I planted that!'

"It's a great honour for us to be involved in this great project."
