Councillors and residents have worked together to improve the back street at Charles Street and Rook Street, Nelson.

Our Back Street Is Brilliant - Thanks to Councils and Residents!

Residents, Pendle Council and Nelson Town Council have teamed up to repair an un-adopted back street, once described as "the worst street in Pendle."

The pot-holed back alley at the rear of Charles Street and Rook Street, off Scotland Road in Nelson, was difficult to walk or drive along and needed major repairs.

In a pioneering partnership project everybody worked together to find a solution to repairing the problem back street which measures some 70 metres in length.

The Bradley residents whose homes backed on to the alley agreed to contribute to the improvement work.

In turn, councillors on Pendle Council and Nelson Town Council heeded the plight of residents and voted to allocate funds for a special repair project.

The residents contributed  £3,000 (£100 per household), Pendle Council's Nelson Area Committee allocated £10,195 and Nelson Town Council £4,000 for the road to be repaired and re-surfaced.

Mr  Mohammed Aslam, Chairman of Bradley Residents' Association collected £100 from each household.

He said: "Residents are very happy - it's magnificent! At last people can walk in the back street.

I know it's an un-adopted road and I thank the councillors who voted to get this project done."

Now he's hoping the partnership approach will help fund future local projects.

Bradley Councillor Nadeem Younis who chairs Pendle Council's Nelson Area Committee, said: "All credit to the Councils and residents for pulling together.

"It's a perfect example of all groups working together and we've got the right result.

"Nelson Area Committee is prepared to help and work with local residents in improving their areas," he added.

Councillor George Adam, Chairman of Nelson Town Council said: "We're happy to help residents where we can and when we can. It's a big improvement."

Scott Whalley, Pendle Council's Development and Projects Manager, said: "It's been a pioneering project which shows partnership working in action.

"As an un-adopted road the responsibility for future maintenance remains with the residents."

Resident Mr William Leigh of Charles Street said: "I think it's absolutely brilliant - there were holes everywhere."

Neighbour Mr Mohammed Siddique from Rook Street added that elderly and disabled peoplewere also benefiting from better access along the back street.

He said: "It's a good job and we're very happy they've done our street. We were happy to contribute and pleased with the result."
