Council adopts Supplementary Planning Document for Railway Street area of Brierfield
Published Wednesday 12th January 11
Pendle Council has formally adopted the Railway Street Area Supplementary Planning Document.
This document, adopted in December 2010, is part of Pendle's Local Development Framework and provides a planning framework for the regeneration projects that are proposed in the Railway Street Masterplan.
The community has been involved in the production of both the Supplementary Planning Document and the Masterplan.
The regeneration proposals for the Railway Street Area, which the Supplementary Planning Document provides more information and guidance on, are:
1. Redeveloping the former stone yard site for quality new housing
2. New residential or mixed-use development on the Railway Street / Cross Street Hub site
3. Improving and extending the Sackville Street Park
4. Streetscape and environmental improvements
5. Block improvements to terraced housing in prominent locations and on specific routes in the area.
There is now uncertainty over future public funding for most of these projects that the Council wants to deliver in the Railway Street area due to the ending of the Housing Market Renewal funding programme from April 2011.
However, the adoption of the Supplementary Planning Document means that there is now a regeneration and planning framework in place for the area.
James Ellis, Principal Planning Officer in the Housing Market Renewal team, said:
"The adopted Supplementary Planning Document will be used to help make decisions on planning applications and provide guidance to developers on the regeneration vision for this area."
Councillor Tonia Barton, Executive Member for Housing Renewal, said:
"I welcome the formal adoption of this supplementary planning document. It will allow us to move forward with regenerating this area, if in the future we can obtain funding, and will also provide guidance to developers, both housing associations and private development companies."
The adopted Railway Street Area Supplementary Planning Document can be viewed at Brierfield Library, Brierfield Town Hall and Number One Market Street in Nelson.
