Families flock to a "Celebration of Brierfield"

Published Tuesday 14th December 10

People of all ages attended a special event on Tuesday, 7th December to celebrate life in Brierfield.

A whole host of exciting activities were held during a "Celebration of Brierfield", allowing people from all sectors of the community to get to know each another.

The event was hosted by NHS East Lancashire Community Health Services at the Family Tree Centre in Tunstall Square, Brierfield.

There was fun for all the family - from Christmas tree decoration making to Henna painting.

A taster selection of Asian and English foods was also available, making sure no one went hungry!

And those attending were also be given the chance to put their stamp on a large mosaic being made to display outside the centre.

Victoria McFadyen, Senior Worker at the Family Tree Centre, said: "We were thrilled to see so many people attend our event - including people who don't normally visit the centre.

"The event was for the whole community, allowing us all to get to know each other a bit better and share our opinions.

"Part of the day was also about seeking people's views of Brierfield to see what people are happy with already and where we can help make improvements."

The event was supported by the Connecting Communities programme, which is managed by Pendle Council's Neighbourhood Management and has backing from Pendle Partnership, Pendle's Local Strategic Partnership (LSP).

Connecting Communities is a major initiative which has been set up to address some of the issues with community cohesion in Brierfield and Reedley.

Sara Mumby, Pendle Council's Brierfield Neighbourhood Manager, said: "This event was perfect for what we are currently trying to achieve in Brierfield and Reedley.

"This includes addressing some of the root causes to the problems we have, such as people from different backgrounds not getting on as well together, compared to other areas in Pendle.

"We want people to feel they can have more of an active part in the community, allowing them to seek advice and have fun at the same time!"

Councillor Mike Blomeley, Leader of Pendle Council and Chairman of Pendle Partnership, added: "Anything which brings the whole community together is something to be celebrated.

"There are challenges to be faced in Brierfield, but there are also lots to be proud of."
