Traffic restrictions on Pendle Hill this Hallowe'en
Published Wednesday 27th October 10
Hallowe'en revellers are being advised by Lancashire Police not to head for Pendle Hill on 31 October.
Pendle Hill had become a hotspot at Hallowe'en, attracting thousands of visitors from across Lancashire.
The Event Safety Advisory Group implemented a plan to control access to Pendle Hill following concerns expressed about the growth of the event, heavy traffic, alcohol related disorder and the use of fireworks. Agencies have agreed the hill is not suitable for these types of activities involving such large numbers of people.
Inspector Chris Saville said: "As with last year, it has been necessary to take these precautions to ensure the public remain safe on Pendle Hill this Hallowe'en. Previous policing operations have been extremely successful with significant reductions in incidents of both anti-social behaviour and criminal damage."
Motorists will be able to drive from the A59 over Pendle Hill to Sabden, where they may park in the village and walk up the hill.
Pendle Hill will be closed to all traffic travelling from Sabden. All vehicles entering the village are asked to leave via alternative routes either towards Padiham or Whalley. Access to the Wellsprings Inn at the Nick o' Pendle will be by ticket only.
There will be 'no waiting' cones on both sides of Clitheroe Road from its junction with Whalley Road, Sabden, over Pendle Hill to the Pendleton turn-off. Specialist contractors will remove any fairground rides, mobile catering units or vehicles parked in the no-waiting area. Safety cones will also be placed down the centre of the road forming two lanes, one for pedestrians and one for cars travelling from the A59.
Residents of Clitheroe Road, Sabden, will receive leaflets advising them of the parking restrictions.
Sabden Parish Council has been consulted and gives its full support for these measures on behalf of local residents.
- Pendle Council has published the Pendle Spooktacular leaflet with details of organised Hallowe'en events in the area for all the family.
