Back to school - look after your valuables

Published Thursday 26th August 10

Children in Pendle are being urged to look after their valuables as they head back to the classroom.

Gone are the days when a new pencil case and a pair of trainers are considered exciting enough!

Most children now have a mobile phone, and many will also take their hand held games consoles, as well as their iPods or MP3 players.

Councillor David Whipp, Chairman of Pendle Community Safety Partnership, said: "Heading back to school is an exciting time for everyone - not just parents!

"Many children will have acquired new games and things to keep them entertained over the summer, which they will be tempted to share with their school friends.

"But our message is - don't risk losing your prize possessions! Keep your personal belongings safe and don't show off your new gadgets."

Crime Prevention Co-ordinator PC Phil Buck added that parents should check to see if their families' possessions are covered when they are temporarily outside the home, under their existing home contents insurance.

He said: "This level of cover is not usually included in a standard home contents insurance policy, but you can opt to add 'personal possession cover away from the home', for which you pay an additional premium.

"It's easy to underestimate the value of what your children are carrying around with them."

Pendle Community Safety Partnership Manager Geoff Whitehead said: "If lockers are available, it is worth asking for one at the beginning of term.

"However, a lot of the time it is about using your common sense and not leaving your valuables lying about."
