Southfield residents enjoy street party

Published Monday 23rd August 10

There was plenty of laughter, fun and dancing in the Southfield area of Nelson at their recent fun day, held on Earl Street.

The area was closed and residents moved their cars to make way for a bouncy castle, marquees, a penalty shoot out, street dancing and stalls.

It was a chance for people to meet their neighbours and find out about what is going on in the area and was organised by Pendle Council's Neighbourhood Management team.

Help Direct, Homestart, the Neighbourhood Policing Team and Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale Council for Voluntary Service were all on hand to give information and advice to residents.

The Neighbourhood Policing team even acted as referees for the penalty shoot out!

Lynne Mitchell from Pendle Council's Neighbourhood Management team co-ordinated the event.

She said:

"Everyone had a fantastic time. We were really pleased that even in the pouring rain so many people still came out and had fun."

One resident said:

"This is such a great event.

"I can't remember the last time something like this happened in our area.

"It's been a great opportunity to meet new people."

Louise Hoole, Assistant Community Development Officer in Pendle Neighbourhood Management team, explained:

"These events are often the first step for people to make connections with each other.

"We want to empower local residents to work together in order to make their neighbourhoods stronger, safer and more enjoyable."
